Sometimes we do actions that hurt ourselves.  And when we do – what happens? Maybe it affects us emotionally or perhaps it affects us physically.

What do we do with that?  Hopefully we can learn from the action so that it doesn’t happen again.  Let me give you an example.

man with emotional and shoulder pain

Emotional Hurt

The gentleman had a long history of trying to be helpful to the people around him.  He was taught by his parents to be the dependable one in the family. So he was the one who arranged family outings and did family errands.

He helped out and sometimes sacrificed to make those things happen. Unfortunately his actions were usually not appreciated. So he would put in the physical  effort and get negative emotional consequences. It would show up in his body as a  shoulder that didn’t move well.  I saw him and treated the shoulder with Perineural injection therapy which markedly improved his shoulder movement.

Emotional Self Care Tips

So what do we learn from this? That Perineural injection therapy is a great therapy?  That may be true but that’s really not the issue.

The issue is that he has been conditioned to take care of others and get no emotional reward.  Getting no emotional reward hurts when there was effort put forward.

The actual issue is to  change the belief that causes him to do something of value and get no value from it. Habits are hard to change, this has been going on for a long time and is part of his brain circuitry.

But recognizing a habit that is not helpful to us is a good first emotional self care tip.  Then consciously deciding to change that habit is the next step. It may be a difficult journey but it’s worth it.
