I learned recently  that there are only 3000 geriatricians in the US.  And why does that matter? Geriatricians are doctors that specialize in elderly people.

And there’s over 55 million people over age 65 as of 2025. So the number of doctors who specialize in elder care is not enough for the amount of elderly people in the U.S.

Luckily I was able to attend the Buck Institute webinar  where geriatrician Dr. John Newman gave a talk on “How to be your Own Geriatrician.”  Here are some points that he made which I will further explain based on my experience.

Senior Health Advice

One elderly health guidance tip he mentioned which I say all the time is “It’s never just one thing. Everything affects everything else.”

People may think they have one health issue but the mind/body is interconnected.  If one thing is not doing well then it will affect other parts of the mind/body.

So usually there are several health issues – rarely or actually never do I see just one health issue.

Another senior health advice tip is that side effects are worse in elder people. Why is that? An older body is less likely to metabolize medications so medications leave the body slower.

There’s more body fat as we get older and less water in the body so medications are more concentrated in the less water of the body. Side effects are more likely to be significant because there is less resilience of the body.

He shared one tip which I thought was interesting. He was questioned about sleep and he made the comment that sleep hygiene is more helpful than sleep medications.

Sleep hygiene is about having a relaxing routine before sleeping.  So it means not to do something that you really like before sleeping.

Because you’ll probably end up doing what you like doing instead of sleeping! A colder temperature room helps lull one to sleep.  And avoiding computer screen time before sleep can help sleep as well.

I hope these senior health advice tips helped you.  The last tip that I will share is one I hope that you already do and doesn’t matter how old you are.

You should be prioritizing what matters to you not what the doctor wants. And the doctor can see if what you prioritize can be done medically.
