Have you ever had a bad experience at the doctor’s office?  Hopefully not everyone is saying  yes.

Sometimes a procedure goes wrong at the doctor’s office as things occasionally do.  And how do you deal with seeing the doctor the next time?  Is there a next time?

Let’s read about an experience of a client overcoming fear of medical procedures.

Dancing lady overcoming fear of doctor's visit

Dancing Lady Overcomes Fear

The formerly active lady had pains over her body which acted up  every couple of months when the stresses of her work made her whole body tighten up in pain all over.  But that was manageable.

She enjoyed dancing.  It was good to move the feet around to the music beat.  She had a knee replacement on her left side which helped.  Then she had an injection on the right knee which set off severe pains all over her body.  That pain changed everything and stopped her from going out as much.

The pain on the knee worsened then it went to the leg, then the back,  and then the Whole body. When she saw me she was very cautious about having anything done to her.

Which I totally understood.

I started with some laser therapy which didn’t involve needles and pain. Then we sprayed medication on her nose which didn’t hurt. She had a painful back so that was injected with a small needle.  She was surprised but she felt pain relief right away.

We continued working on her back so that the pain was improving.  After about 15 minutes of continued injections and  continued pain relief, she said “Whatever you want to inject – I’ll let you inject”.

So I injected the nose!  It was because the nose had surgery before and was causing trouble to the rest of her body.

Facing Doctor Appointments

So how do you deal with fear of medical procedures?

  1. You state your fear. . If the doctor doesn’t know you’re scared, he/she can’t help you with the fear.
  2.  Do things at your own pace. Take it easy.  Start with procedures that don’t cause pain.
  3.  If you tolerate the gentle procedures, you can go to procedures that may have caused some fear in the past

Realize that there is a reason that you had fear of the doctor’s visit.  You have to deal with the fear and not deny it.

The doctor has to deal with the fear and take it easy with your fear.  I can’t  inject someone’s nose first thing who’s scared of an injection.  But if the doctor takes it slow and builds trust, the patient may get rid of their fear and also feel better!
